Revitalization of the moors between Hora Svatého Sebestiána and Satzung - Phase 1

Four partners were involved in the two-year project, which was financed in large part by the European Union. The “Erzgebirge/Vorgtland (Ore Mountain/Vogt County)” nature park acted as the lead partner and was therefore responsible for coordinating the project. On the German side, Landesdirektion Chemnitz (State Administration of Chemnitz) and the Landesamt für Umwelt, Landwirtschaft und Geologie (State Office for Envirionment, Agriculture, and Geology) remained involved. The offices of the Ústí nad Labem region was the partner from the Czech Republic.
On the German side, the “Kriegswiese” nature preserve is a main focus, since the catchment area for this ridge moor is located in Czech territory and is partially cut off from the moor by a border road. On the Czech side, the so-called Hassberger moors with large drainage ditches three meters wide in places have been the focus of research efforts.
The official completion event for the project was held at the Regional Museum Chomutov in March of 2012. Results of the hydrological, floristic, and faunistic research were presented there.

Implemented by a total of six project partners (two Czech and four German partners) under the LEAD partnership of the Staatsbetriebs Sachsenforst (Statutory Public Body for Forestry in Saxony) Marienberg Forest District, the project pursued the main goal of revitalizing approximately 230 ha of moor area. This was done with the aim of creating better conditions for regeneration of the once widespread moor areas on the Ore Mountain ridge in the middle of the Ore Mountains. In order to ensure efficient and expeditious implementation of the planned re-watering measures, predominantly external construction companies possessing the necessary technology to put the drainage ditches out of commission and level areas were used. Nature preserve employees constructed the dams by hand in sensitive parts of the Kriegswiese nature preserve. The “Erzgebirge/Vogtland (Ore Mountain/Vogt County)” nature preserve was also in charge of implementing measures in the Meierhaide near Reitzenhain and Bornhaide near Satzung.
